Been practising the popup on my board on my bedroom floor tonight

. Supported it well with cushins n stuff so it wouldnt break - but yeah man its well hard

.
Cant seem to get my left leg far up enough to be of any use. but hell I'll keep trying.
Been doing this in my underwear n now I'm all covered in wax - yum!
Do you think that doing loads of squat jumps every day will help?

Hey man.
When my sister needed to improve her popping up technique i got a big piece of cardboard and cut out the shape of her board. She could then practice on the floor - getting her footwork right etc - without damaging her board.
Just do it in steps and slowly...
e.g. Step 1: Look to where you are going
Step 2: pull hands back to "push up" position on rail etc.
After a while you will become more fluid and it will be easy to master in the water.
Oh and i reckon doing push-ups help fitness-wise

Without wanting to state the obvious, the best thing to do for pop-ups, better than squats or push ups is...
...wait for it...
Pop ups!!
I've got the book - 'Fit to Surf' and the guy recommends 'explosive push ups' ie. pushing yourself up of the floor so hard you 'jump' into the air.
I'd just keep practising the pop ups - even with no board or cutout, once you've got the fluid movement, you can work on positioning.
Cheers

One little minor tip that helped me when I started is to place your hands directly under your shoulders vs. the rail for a solid, stable push upward. Also remember to keep your legs bent and your center of gravity low to keep you balance immediately after the pop up. Good luck.

yeah after not surfing very much during the spring, and being in texas I found when I got back on my shortboard in some decent stuff, I was a bit rusty. So at home I'd randomly just lay down, and say like, ok, the next time my sister talks I'll popup, and just kept doing that until the next time I surfed it was much smoother.

hah yeah she'd allways make remarks about something on tv or something...
I'd do different things too... like the next time that guy on tv raises his right hand... it got very creative after a while...

Somthing to remember that when poping up on the actuall wave the board will naturall drop away from you as it goes down the face. So don't beat yourself up too much if your not popin'up at the click of a finger :p
