I am a noob, but i will add this because it helped me, charge hard gor the steepest part of the wave if you know you wont make the shoulder. Its easier to penetrate the wave if you enter at the steepest part.

Of course timing and positioning have it's place....if you are too far out and you try to make the face and you're late.....don't be late....
