The Stormrider Surf Guide Europe

It seems like a very long time now since the first edition of the Stormrider Guide to Europe hit the shelves (it was back in 1989) and it's great to get a look at the latest edition of this essential guide - the fourth edition no less!

The 4th Edition of the guide has been completely revised and updated and still remains packed full of useful background information, surf spot guides and hundreds of great surf pictures. It covers all surfing countries in Europe and includes the Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores and Morocco.

The intro section of the guide covers general topics like the creation of swell, forecasting and the Ocean Environment and makes for very informative reading. It is not full of technical jargon to confuse the novice and has great illustrations to back up the text.

As with the previous guides, the main bulk of the book is split up into each different country. There is a general guide to the surf, including the best time of the year for swell and handy quick surf statistics. There are also sections on Surf Culture, the Ocean Environment and Travel Information for each country.

Each country is then broken down into the different surf regions - this is where the surf break information is listed in detail. Each break has it location pinpointed on the map and has a handy quick symbol guide that outlines the important information about the break, followed by a description of the wave. These break pages are interspersed with great shots of the waves on offer in the area.

This latest European edition is highly recommended. It's in-depth, well researched information and great photography make this an essential guide for any surfer. It is good to see that the high standards that Low Pressure have set with the Stormrider Guide series is still being maintained.

Just something to note - one of the problems with this book (and others in the range) is that they are just too large to take with you if you want to travel light. It's good to see that Low Pressure have addressed the problem and made these guides, and smaller region guides, available to download as eBooks from Low Pressure (www.lowpressure.co.uk) - easily download then print out the pages that are relevant to your trip before you leave.
