Information about Kaikoura
Kaikoura is a popular tourist town located on the East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand about 2 hours drive north from Christchurch. There are lots of activities to try in the area but probably one of the most popular is the whale watching and also the swimming with dolphins.
The scenery is spectacular and the waves are good. It is nice to be sitting in the lineup and see the snow capped mountains.
'Kaikoura' means 'To eat crayfish' ('kai'- to eat, 'koura' - crayfish)

The quality of the waves in and around Kaikoura is down to the Hikurangi Trench which allows swells to come straight out of deep water. The numerous spots catch swell from far up north to the big deep low pressure swells of the roaring forties.
Be prepared for big, powerful and hollow waves.
The waves are less consistent in the summer but very consistent in the winter.
There is a surf spot in town to get equipment if required.
